Using Technology to Support Multiple Intelligences

It is refreshing to go through the concept of multiple intelligences in a Special-Ed. course, I am taking currently. In the words of Howard Gardner

“We are all so different largely because we have different combinations of intelligences. If we recognize this, we will have a better chance of dealing appropriately with the many problems that we face in the world. "

According to Howard Gardner, all humans have varying degrees of intelligences (nine types) based upon their experiences and genetics set-up. These multiple intelligences can be nurtured, strengthened, or ignored and weakened with use or by paying special attention. His theory is widely accepted in the education community, as it enables us to understand the significance of incorporating music, art, visuals arts and drama to make learning a meaningful process. Besides, it also supports the concept of differentiated instruction. By acknowledging various learning preferences, teachers can create authentic opportunities where students can learn based on their interests, talents, need and aptitudes.

I decided to do my own little research to find how technology can be used to tap different learning styles.  I found following websites, resources and documents that draw on technology and Multiple Intelligences.

Practical Resources to Use in Classroom:

Apps for multiple intelligencesIt is great piece of information by Suzanne Lustenhouwer  on different ipads apps that work well to delve on multiple intelligences.

Note:   Although I feel, on one hand we might not just categorize the students based on just one or few types of particular intelligences but the concept of multiple intelligence help us to differentiate our instruction based on their personal learning styles. And as they work on lessons designed on their interests and preferences; they will receive positive intellectual stimuli and that makes learning a fun experience. As an exemplar, see my student handout for a test, I designed for the grade 11 SPH3U- Energy and Society.
